Roger Debo is the chair of Xanofi’s board of directors. He currently serves as director of NC State’s Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization (TEC) program, and guide’s Xanofi in developing growth models and establishing industry relationships. He has 11 years experience in launching technology-based startup companies that have raised over $200 million and has served on the Board of Directors of four start-up companies.
Retired, Senior Executive for North Carolina, IBM
Dick Daugherty provides a wealth and lifetime of business acumen and connections to the North Carolina business community. Mr. Daugherty retired from IBM in 1994 after 37 years of service as the Vice President of Worldwide Manufacturing for the PC Company, 22 years of which were spent as the Senior Executive for North Carolina. Mr. Daugherty served as the Executive Director for NC State University Research Corporation, focusing on the development of Centennial Campus from 1995-2001. He has served as trustee on many industry boards including Wachovia Bank, Troxler Electronics and Progress Energy.
Dr. Hal Hopfenberg
Director Emeritus, Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology, and Science Camille Dreyfus Professor Emeritus of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering North Carolina State University
Dr. Hopfenberg is the Camille Dreyfus Professor Emeritus of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NCSU and the former Department Head for Chemical Engineering. He has served as a special assistant to the Chancellor of NC State University and also served as Director of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he has served on the editorial boards of The Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering and Science, The Journal of Membrane Science, and Gas Separation and Purification.
Associate Director, Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology, & Science, North Carolina State University
Raj Narayan serves as secretary of Xanofi and is currently the Associate Director of the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science. Mr. Narayan has over 12 years experience in the area of technology based innovation and entrepreneurship. He has served as the director of NC State’s Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization (TEC) program and as a TEC program executive –in-residence guiding early stage commercialization plan development for several start-up companies. Mr. Narayan holds a business degree from UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, a Master of Science in Management with a concentration in High Tech Entrepreneurship from NC State University, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Florida College of Law. Mr. Narayan is a member of the North Carolina State Bar.
Dr. Stoyan Smoukov
Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, Cambridge University
Dr. Smoukov was co-principal investigator in the development of the Xanofi technology. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Northwestern University. Stoyan has 10 years of polymer research and engineering experience and the past 6 years spent specifically on nanoscience and nanofiber technology. Dr. Smoukov also serves on Xanofi’s board of directors.
Dr. Orlin Velev
INVISTA Professor, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, North Carolina State University
Dr. Velev was the principal investigator in charge of developing the technology licensed to Xanofi. He has established a record of innovative research in the area of functional nanostructures, biosensors and microfluidic devices. He has been the first to synthesize “inverse opals,” one of the most widely studied types of photonic materials today. He also pioneered principles for microscopic biosensors with direct electrical detection, discovered novel types of self-assembling supraparticles, microwires and designed new microfluidic chips. He has contributed more than 110 publications, which have been cited more than 5,900 times, and has presented more than 125 invited presentations at major conferences, universities and companies. Dr. Velev serves as a scientific advisor to Xanofi and also serves on its board of directors.
Miles has over 20 years of startup and entrepreneurial expertise in a variety of fields, including building a 65,000 sq. ft., 150 person manufacturing plant from the ground up. His successful startups include Accugraphics, Eyebeam, Signature Publishing, and MCW Properties. He has also developed new technology for CoastMaster and Graphic Detail. In addition he has co-founded two successful nonprofits and served as a Director for numerous organizations. For the last four years Miles has served as an Executive-in-Residence in the Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization program at North Carolina State University.
